IRISH PRISON SERVICE LAUNCHES RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN FOR 2024

Aug 29, 2024 | Nationwide News

The Irish Prison Service intends to take more than 250 recruit prison officers on board as part of its 2024 recruitment campaign, which was launched on 29 August, with candidates encouraged to apply before the closing date for applications on 26 September.

Launching this year’s recruitment competition for the Irish Prison Service, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee (pictured left) said that she was determined to see further growth in numbers recruited to building on 2023, as well as the increase in the retirement age for those who wish to stay on to 62 years of age, which she recently announced. Last year’s recruitment competition attracted more than 1,800 applicants.

“The Government will continue to invest in our prisons to ensure those who join the prison service feel supported in their jobs and can work to the very best of their abilities. Anyone interested in pursuing a worthwhile and fulfilling career with the Irish Prison Service should consider an application,” the Minister noted.

Caron McCaffrey, Director General of the Irish Prison Service, added: “Prison officers play a vital security role while also serving as catalysts for positive change, guiding individuals in custody towards rehabilitation. Together, we envision a safer community through excellence in a prison service built on respect for human dignity.”

Further information and online applications are available at Public Jobs. The closing date for all entries is Thursday 26 September. All eligible candidates will undergo a selection process, including written assessments, physical fitness tests, interviews, and background checks.

Successful candidates will receive extensive training and mentorship to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge required for the role. The competition will culminate in the selection of several candidates who will be offered positions as prison officers within the Irish Prison Service.
